The Data Reuse Principle¶
While both GEMM and GEMV are and operations respectively, the key difference for GPUs is arithmetic intensity, not just big‑O complexity. GEMM performs more floating‑point operations per element loaded than GEMV, so it does far more work per byte moved from memory.
On an NVIDIA A100, large, well‑tiled GEMM kernels can sustain more than 90% of the GPU’s theoretical peak FLOPS, whereas GEMV is typically memory‑bound and often achieves well under 10% of peak FLOPS.
GEMM repeatedly reuses matrix tiles that reside in registers and on‑chip caches, while GEMV has very little data reuse and spends most of its time waiting on DRAM bandwidth rather than executing arithmetic instructions.
Hardware Acceleration: Tensor Cores & Tiling¶
